I’ve gotten behind on responding to emails, but please know I am reading your emails and I love you! Today, I finally said, “This is IT! I am going to sit down and write!” So I am writing… to you!
Quiet Seasons of Life
Writing has always been one of my favorite activities, especially when I am writing to you. But lately, I’ve been posting a lot of short videos just to say “hi” – and I haven’t been writing. So today, I am stopping in to check on you. How are you doing?
I think we all go through seasons in our lives. There are times when we feel more psychic than others, for example. There are times when we are ‘kickin’ butt and takin’ names’ (really getting things done!) and times when it feels like we can’t even tie our shoes.
Can you relate?
Give yourself some time…
I guess the key is learning how to be accepting and compassionate of all the versions of ourselves the we bump into, whether we are coming or going. To just be understanding to the current version of you, today.
We are never perfect, right? All of us are probably aware of our glaring imperfections – yet here we are, bumbling through life. And life seems to be getting ever more challenging with each passing day. You deserve credit for that! For just living in this world! It ain’t easy!!!
But here you are, reading this and hanging in there. You are facing your challenges with grace… with courage… Every. Single. Day. I am so proud of you! And I hope you are proud of yourself!
Give yourself some credit.
There are lots of scary things out there today. We are seeing things that seem to be threatening to our very existence. Add to that our empathic tendency to feel what everyone else is feeling, and that adds a whole “nother layer to what already can feel overwhelming.
We all need time for refilling.
It is easy to run away from the scary stuff by watching Netflix movies, playing games, or reading fiction. I know! I’m right there with ya! But I know from my own experience that doing those things only prolongs the agony and creates more overwhelm. Watch out for doomscrolling, too! Keeping an eye on the news is like watching a car accident. There is a morbid fascination…
Self Care
One lesson that I have to keep in mind is self-care. I often throw myself into working before I have taken care of myself through eating, exercise, nature time, meditation, and/or walking outdoors. You can’t draw water from an empty well. You can’t drive on fumes!
For those of us who are not in immediate danger, or who are not physically located in the midst of the battle… what can we do?
Helping Others Helps You
Each day, we can ask ourselves, “What is one thing I can do to help someone else?”
I like to close my eyes in meditation and see what comes.
It also helps to look at my to-do list and see if there are things on there that could be adjusted to help others. Giving and helping are two big ways that help me to feel better. What we do doesn’t have to be big, difficult or expensive.
Here are just a few ideas that may help:
- Make a phone call to encourage someone.
- Write a letter.
- Purge your closets and give away extra “stuff” that someone in your community could use.
- If you like to cook, create a meal or a big pot of soup and make enough to share with a friend or neighbor who’s sick or needing encouragement.
I believe our combined light can make a difference. We are meant to be living in these historic times.
We are all being confronted with choices daily! Thankfully, we can all measure our choices against the yardstick called LOVE. Is what I am (doing, thinking, saying) the most loving choice?
I hope this letter is a mood-booster for you.
Much love,
